Schema Therapy Institute
Cleveland

Joan M. Farrell, Ph.D.

Ida A. Shaw, M.A

Certified Schema Therapy Trainer-Supervisors

The Schema Therapy Institute Cleveland was founded in 2010 to provide training and supervision in individual, group, and child-adolescent Schema Therapy. The training programs provided here are approved by the International Society of Schema Therapy to meet the requirements for international certification as a standard or advanced level schema therapist and supervisor-trainers.

Up until 2020, Joan & Ida traveled to provide in-person training in 24 countries. During the COVID pandemic, we moved all training to the online format of Zoom. We plan to continue online training and supervision as we move into our 70s, as it is just not as easy or fun to travel internationally, and our 4 Yorkies, born during the stay-at-home orders, will not let us out of the house. However, Joan occasionally escapes to London and other European sites to train in person.

In 2024, we moved to the Cleveland, Ohio area, thus the change in our name.  We plan to continue our ZOOM training and supervision from our new location.

Join Jeffrey Young, Wendy Behary, Joan Farrell, Ida Shaw
and other founders of Schema Therapy for this historic event.

This 2 day live online Symposium December 4 and 5 2025: Changing Lives: Celebrating 35 Years of Jeffrey Young’s Schema Therapy, features 26 internationally recognized authorities in Schema Therapy who will share highlights from their respective areas of expertise.

Jeff’s first book was published in 1990, Cognitive Therapy for Personality Disorders: A Schema Focused Approach, followed by the primary Schema Therapy reference, The Schema Therapy Practitioner’s Guide, in 2003. In thirty-five years, Schema Therapy has spread throughout the globe. It is time to focus on developing Schema Therapy in North America, where the model was created.

Our celebration of those thirty-five years and the lives that have been changed will culminate with the formal introduction of the Jeffrey Young Schema Therapy Association. This organization, founded in the USA has the goals of: preserving the integrity of the original evidence-based model of Schema Therapy developed by Jeff Young and increasing awareness of Schema Therapy, particularly in the underdeveloped area of North America where both individual and group ST were developed. JYSTA will provide membership levels for all schema therapists and others interested in learning about and supporting Schema Therapy. Your involvement and participation are crucial to the success of this association, and your expertise, enthusiasm, and experience are vital to this mission.
